Role Responsibility

As Privacy and Data Protection Manager, you will understand Selfridges and it’s vision of being the destination for extraordinary customer experience whilst ensuring key compliance requirements are met. You will embrace Selfridges as a whole, from the customer facing front-of-house teams to the back-of-house functions and project teams that are needed to run a truly omni-channel, global, luxury retailer. Reporting to the Head of Legal (Data & Privacy), you will be impactful, build strong relationships and bring a positive, pragmatic decision-making focus, identifying risk and balancing with common sense and a can-do attitude in a fast-paced environment.

As Privacy and Data Protection Manager you will:

ØProvide expert data protection advice and expertise, supporting the Head of Legal (Data & Privacy) and the business, advising key stakeholders on privacy and data protection issues in a commercially savvy way, taking into account the nature of the business, its risk appetite, providing a steer and offering a view

ØMaintain, and further develop, Selfridges’ privacy framework, updating processes, procedures and policies and developing team member learning resources and comms strategies

ØSupport on business projects, identifying privacy risks, data protection requirements and implications for Selfridges and completing DPIA/LIAs, ensuring that privacy requirements are embedded ‘by design’ into systems and processes using personal data, collaborating with other team members as required

ØMaintain Selfridges’ records of processing and privacy documentation, manage the processes for handling rights based requests, complaints and queries and lead investigations into potential data breaches

ØAssist with legal documents and processes, advice notes, disputes/litigation and/or any investigations eg from a regulator

ØWork alongside key stakeholders to continue to embed data privacy considerations within Selfridges’ culture and grow expertise across the business

ØProduce management information and create presentations on data protection topics for relevant committees and other audiences

ØKeep colleagues up to date on relevant law, compliance/legal requirements and best practice affecting Selfridges’ global business

ØSupport the Legal team to be a high performing team; inspiring, supporting, coaching, supervising and leading, as required, to help the Legal team get to the core of a problem quickly, to navigate legal requirements and issues whilst supporting colleagues to achieve their goals to drive the business forward

The Ideal Candidate

- An enthusiastic data protection specialist with a proven track record as a privacy advisor/manager, including depth of experience in data protection matters relevant to a global omni-channel company (eg adtech)

- Holding excellent academics and specific data protection qualifications (eg CIPP/E)

- Equipped with a sound understanding of the legal and regulatory context in which Selfridges operates; able to demonstrate an understanding of the role, its pace, demands and requirements

- Able to demonstrate a detailed knowledge of privacy legal and regulatory requirements and their practical application (eg GDPR, PECR, PIPL), gained through extensive hands-on experience, as well as related governance best practice

- Experienced in managing data protection compliance in a complex, multi-jurisdictional environment eg processing rights based requests, reviewing DPIAs/LIAs, data breach management, data mapping, governance documentation and management information reporting, and supporting large cross-functional projects

- Solutions focused and analytical; you are excellent at seeing through a problem and finding a solution, with strong organisational skills and a keen eye for detail and can demonstrate your ability to translate complex data protection and legal matters into straightforward, pragmatic and user-friendly advice

- A great communicator; with sound interpersonal skills and strong written and verbal  communication, you use plain English (without jargon) and are able to challenge and influence business stakeholders

- A good listener; able to be a collaborative team member and to offer leadership or ideas when required

- Able to manage deadlines and a complex workload, adjusting your pace or direction in a calm, friendly and well-planned manner; able to think strategically, plan and deliver projects

- Familiar with excellent customer service from both customer and brand perspectives; experience of the retail sector or of advising brand-led businesses would be advantageous

- An ambassador for the Data Protection Office and wider Legal team, an example of our values, a trusted and respected colleague
