The Climate/Environmental Co-ordinator sits within the Sustainability & Innovation team, reporting to the Head of Sustainability & Innovation, with a dotted line into Group Senior Sustainability Manager (Climate), and specifically supports the Net Zero and Environmental agenda.  

The Climate/Environmental Co-ordinator will integrate within the business to provide day-to-day support and coordination on all Environmental Sustainability and Net Zero operational matters. The role involves project coordination, scoping new initiatives, and expert data management, analysis and reporting of environmental performance, particularly carbon across Scopes 1,2 and 3.  

Your priority focus areas include: operational footprint (energy, carbon, water, waste), packaging, supply chain (distribution and logistics) and sustainable design/build  and reporting. Your key internal stakeholders include Property, Procurement, Supply Chain and Design teams.  

 

Key responsibilities: 

Supporting delivery -– Destinations Climate and ESG: (with support from Head of Sustainability): 

  • Integrate and support delivery of our Destinations’ environmental sustainability strategy & carbon reduction & decarbonisation targets (SBTs and Net Zero). by providing day-to-day support and technical advice to multiple delivery teams.  

  • Support Selfridges with decarbonising its value chain through supplier engagement, onboarding, and brand tracking (Scope 3). 

  • Identify and embed the governance required to deliver strategic priorities.  

  • Work cross functionally with multiple stakeholders by providing support and technical advice to delivery teams and to consolidating sustainability initiatives into year-on-year environmental action plans and drive the delivery of these plans.  

  • Integrate climate and environmental into all strategic sustainability pillars such as Circular and Responsible Sourcing.  

  • Provide support to embed the sustainable packaging strategy and targets, update packaging guidelines, find innovative solutions and advise teams on sustainable packaging selection, as necessary. 

  • Analyse environmental performance to identify anomalies and trends by utilising BMS, site walks, and regular utilities meeting. Consolidate and track improvement actions at all locations. 

  • Translate long-term ambitions into short term targets and action plans for Net Zero and ESG.  

  • Provide administrative support to cross functional working groups (e.g. packaging, waste reduction and utilities) such as agendas, minute taking, data and presentations.  

  • Support roll-out of Sustainable Build Guidelines, ensuring requirements are integrated into projects and understood by delivery teams, and support project data collection and reporting.  

  • Support delivery and monitoring of our supply chain sustainability plan covering distribution and logistics, including performance of the distribution centre. 

  • Advise and encourage internal teams to embed environmental sustainability within all projects and events.  

  • Develop and integrate environmental operational processes and standards to support the delivery of the Destinations environmental strategy.   

 

Reporting and compliance  

Own Selfridges’ carbon reporting across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 Develop and maintain an inventory for all environmental & carbon data, ensuring data is complete and accurate, and aligning to internal and external reporting requirements e.g. SBTs, ESOS, SECR. 

  • Support the certification and reporting to external standards and commitments e.g. Carbon Trust Standard, Climate Pledge, Fashion Pact.  

  • Co-ordinate data collection and verify GHG emissions for our science-based targets (Scopes 1, 2, 3), with a particular focus on Scope 3 data collection and improvement.  

  • Collate quantitative & qualitative environmental information from multiple sources and provide expert data analysis, benchmarking, and regular reporting of environmental performance. 

  • Co-ordinate, monitor and analyse packaging performance andESG compliance data to fulfil reporting and legal obligations e.g. Plastics Tax and EPR. 

Communications     

  • Engage and upskill teams on environmental sustainability topics, creating awareness documents and delivering training. 

  • Regularly communicate environmental sustainability performance, achievements, and case studies e.g. through monthly newsletter/report, Yammer, and Green Warriors.  

  • Regularly present environmental updates at stakeholder meetings and working groups. 

Team: 

  • Support the development and implementation of team tools, processes, and systems. 

  • Provide timely and robust support to Senior Sustainability Manager and Head of Sustainability & Innovation as needed. 

  • Provide input to broader Reselfridges strategy development and future revisions, as appropriate. 

  • Provide administrative support to team as required e.g. raising purchase orders…

Person Specification: 

Qualifications/ Training 

  • Degree in related subject and/or appropriate professional qualification and membership e.g. IEMA. 

Experience  

  • Experience in a similar role and/or experience working in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Knowledge of environmental sustainability issues affecting property, supply chain and the retail sector. 

  • Experience in communicating environmental sustainability requirements and coordinating environmental action plans. 

  • Experience in collecting information (qualitative and quantitative) from multiple sources and evaluating complex/large data sets, with the ability to synthesise into reports and deliver meaningful insight. 

  • Experience using management systems (e.g. ISO 14001) and delivering mandatory reporting and external certifications.  

  • Experience in creating and delivering environmental engagement programmes. 

 

Technical Skills 

  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel and other MS Office applications (i.e. Word, PowerPoint). 

  • Knowledge of technical environmental issues including carbon reduction, circular economy, packaging, and key principles of sustainable design and build (e.g. BREEAM).   

  • Understanding of carbon footprint calculation methodology (e.g. GHG Protocol).  

  • Understanding of mandatory environmental reporting, legislation, and compliance requirements (current and future), in relation to energy, carbon, waste & packaging.
