Role Responsibility

A rare and exciting opportunity to join a dynamic technology team in a leading luxury retailer. The Enterprise Architect role owns the architecture for our Customer and Selling (Omnichannel) product domain. This includes all of the capabilities and technologies that underpin customer experience, service and engagement across all channels and markets.

The role is responsible for shaping and managing the domain technology strategy and roadmap and ensuring that this is clearly aligned to the business strategy and desired outcomes. This is achieved by working closely with the Head of Technology, Heads of Product, Principal Engineer, Head of Architecture and the broader architecture and delivery team(s). The role leads a team of Solution Architects through the design and realisation of the defined outcomes through the delivery teams, and is accountable for the ongoing evolution of the technology platforms.

You will embrace Agile Architecture, effectively balancing intentional architecture and emergent design without compromising on strategic intent and quality, and understand how risk and technical debt can support prioritisation discussions.

As an Enterprise Architect you will …

Lead the definition, management and alignment of the technology roadmap for the domain, in line with the broader business and technology strategy. This includes ensuring that all defined and agreed outcomes are baked into the appropriate delivery plans.

Be responsible for the analysis of technology trends in the domain to determine their potential impact on the business, proactively identifying opportunities that will enable Selfridges to meet its business and technology goals at pace. This includes the shaping of and participation in technology selection processes.

Define and evolve the architecture blueprint(s) and guardrails for the domain, adapting where new patterns or approaches are required and tracking all architecturally significant decisions. Ensure that all solutions are architected, designed and realised in accordance with the defined architecture guardrails. Ensure that all architecture artefacts are accessible, agreed, clear and current.

Ensure that all technology solutions are architected and realised with the quality properties in mind. This includes functional suitability (including security and compliance), usability, performance efficiency, compatibility, reliability, maintainability (including extensibility) and portability.

Build strong relationships with the domain leadership team, key business stakeholders and  broader technology team. This includes promoting architecture ways of working, the desired outcomes and their business benefit. Ensure that opportunities for improvement are identified and actioned.

The Ideal Candidate

Experienced. A strong background in leading strategy, architecture, design and realisation of the following: digital experience (including visual merchandising, search and content management), digital and retail commerce (including digital commerce engines, retail point of sale, payments and clientelling solutions), customer experience and engagement services (including appointment booking, customer services, CRM, marketing, personalisation and social).

Technical. You will have practitioner level knowledge in all areas of the domain and experience of evolving and realising a modern technology strategy (microservices, cloud native, headless, and event driven architecture). You will also have demonstrable knowledge and skills in architecture storytelling, modelling and management.

Passionate and knowledgeable about modern technology and industry trends, with the ability to translate business needs into technology architecture and to recommend options - including solution fit, evolution over time and total cost of ownership.

A natural leader and dynamic team player. You will have the ability to manage, influence and coach direct reports, peers and external stakeholders in an engaging and collaborative manner. This includes providing positive and inspiring feedback when appropriate.

Consensus driving and highly organised. You will have the proven ability to bring together cross-functional and cross-organisational teams to work together to define the future, align on outcomes, agree architecture and designs, and embed effectively into delivery plans.

An excellent communicator and storyteller, both verbal and written. You excel in the relationships you build with stakeholders and are adept at flexing your style to match the audience. You are able to engage and inspire both technical teams and business stakeholders (at different levels of the organisation).

You are innovative and an exceptional problem solver, highly skilled at abstraction and decomposition, and driving elegant and simple solutions.

Strategic. You are able to effectively balance the long-term vision and goals with the need to opportunity and value swiftly.
